Whereas a remedial massage will tend to focus on addressing key problem areas in the body, a relaxation (or Swedish) massage is much more general in its approach and will generally spend time massaging the back, arms, legs, neck and shoulders. The intent of a relaxation massage is primarily to provide a space for the recipient to wind down and de-stress.
Typically the strokes within a Swedish massage will be long and smooth using a fair amount of oil. The massage is given without any intent to 'release' any specific areas of restriction. There should be a flow and rhythm to the massage to enable you to mentally drift to wherever you wish.
There is a misconception that a relaxation massage must be light. Whilst the pressure of a relaxation massage can be gentle there are many people who respond well to a firm, strong touch.
It's just that the strong touch is not specifically focussing on problem areas.
Richard will typically use a fairly solid pressure for a relaxation session (albeit working within your pressure threshold/preference) using hands, knuckles and forearms with slow fluid strokes.

Please note: if you would like to be able to claim a rebate from a health fund then it is a requirement that a significant proportion of the massage must be remedial in nature. A de-stressing relaxation massage is not recognised by the funds as being eligible for a rebate.
